If the leak is sufficiently large that the MS cannot be safely turned ON, the Ion Gauge can sometimes be used as a 'leak detector.' With the Gauge Power and Filament ON, spray in the detection gas in small areas while watching the Gauge Meter. A rapid increase in the pressure will be observed when the leak is sprayed. This method is less reliable than when the MS itself can be used.
